Pharmacy to Get New Management System
The Benewah Medical Center is pleased to announce the
successful implementation of Phase 1 of a 3 - 5 year Information Systems
Strategic Plan which sees us adopt an Electronic Health Record system instead of
paper charts.
This first phase
consisted of replacing our legacy pharmacy management and dispensing system with
a Windows based system built on Microsoft's SQL Server relational database
called GuardianRx.
Having a
system which is built on an industry standard open architecture we will be able
to report in ways not possible previously and interface with a large number of
other Health Information Systems.
The new system will also allow us to do things such as keep
a perpetual inventory and automatically reorder drugs. Most importantly, it will
greatly increase our pharmacy's accuracy and efficiency improving patient care.
Not only will the new system
be an improvement for the Pharmacy but also for our Patient Financial Services.
They will be able to get reports on financial activity in much greater detail
and with much less effort than before.
For those not familiar with what a pharmacy management
system does here are some of the funcitonalities it provides:
- Drug Dispensing
- Accounts Receivable
- Inventory
- HIPAA compliance
- Electronic Signature Capture
- Workflow and productivity tools
- Allergy checking
- 3rd party claims adjudication via the Internet
- Tracking of multiple wholesalers
- A/R and Reconciliation functions
- Reporting
- Interface with Robotics/automated dispensing systems
- Industry standard HL7 interfaces to other key systems
- Electronic and automatic pricing, clinical and
software updates
Everyone involved is very excited to see the project
finally take shape and the improvements it will bring to the Benewah Medical
Center.
If you have any questions or would like to
know more please contact Rick Moore, IS Manager at 208-686-1931.
BMC/WC Receives the Johnson & Johnson "Crystal
Award"
This year the Benewah Medical & Wellness Center
received the Johnson & Johnson Community Health Care Program Leadership
"Crystal Award". This award recognizes outstanding community health programs
that are making a positive difference in the health of their communities. BMC/WC
is being recognized specifically for the quality, comprehensive and integrated
programs that serve the entire community both Indian and Non-Indian. The award
also noted our interdisciplinary, holistic approach to care with the patient and
client at the center of that care. Along with the recognition comes a check for
$50,000 that will be used to support programs in the care and prevention of
patients with cardiovascular disease and depression.
Diabetes Collaborative
BMC has been chosen by the Bureau of Primary Health Care
(BPHC) to participate in a Diabetes Health Disparities Collaborative. Each
Collaborative involves about 100 health center organizations working together
for about 13 months. During that time, organizations attend/participate in 3
Learning Sessions and one National Collaborative Congress. At the Collaborative
Congress, organizations share findings and achievements with the greater health
care community. Organizations maintain continual contact with each other and the
Collaborative Leadership Team.
Centers participating in this Collaborative agree to adopt
shared national measure in the treatment of Diabetes as well as local measures
based on proven guidelines. Measures are aligned with expert guidelines,
external reporting requirements, and other community standards of care. One
important national measure is "patient self-management" since supporting
self-care is an integral part of the chronic model.
BMC is looking forward to participating in this DM
Collaborative so that we can provide our patients with DM treatment and care
that has been tested nationally and found to be a best practice method. We will
keep you updated on our progress throughout the year.
